What is screening 
Screening is a way of finding out if people are at higher risk of a health problem, so that early treatment can be offered or information given to help them make decisions about treatment.

The NHS offers screening for Cancer and Non Cancer related illness 

CANCER SCREENING
What is cancer screening?
Cancer screening is a way of checking your body for signs that you are have or at risk of cancer before you have symptoms. Getting screening tests regularly may find breast, cervical, and colorectal (colon) cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best and therefore give the best chance of a cure.

Cervical cancer screening
Cervical screening (a smear test) checks the health of your cervix.
During the screening appointment, a small sample of cells will be taken from your cervix.
It is offered to women aged 25 to 64. It is offered every 3 years for those aged 26 to 49, and every 5 years from the ages of 50 to 64.
If you develop any unexplained, unusual bleeding, whatever your age, book an appointment and get it checked.

Breast Screening
Breast screening is offered to women aged 50 to 70 to detect early signs of breast cancer. Women over 70 can self-refer.
Be Breast Aware
It is recommended that all women regularly check their breasts and be familiar with how they feel as this is the best way to detect changes.
If you notice any changes in your breast, new lumps or thickenings, change in the skin or nipple don't delay - book an appointment at the surgery.

Bowel Cancer screening
There are 2 types of screening for bowel cancer:
- A home testing kit is offered to men and women aged 60 to 74
- Bowel scope screening uses a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end to look at the large bowel. It is offered to men and women at the age of 55.
Symptoms of bowel cancer
The incidence of bowel cancer is rising, with more people between 50-60 being diagnosed.
Whatever your age; if you develop a new change in your bowel habit, persistent abdominal pain, any bleeding from your back passage or unexplained weight loss, book an appointment. Learn more about bowel cancer symptoms here.

NON CANCER SCREENING
HIV Screening
HIV is a sexually transmitted infection. Untreated HIV can cause AIDS which impairs the immune system and can lead to  life threatening infections and illnesses.

With an early diagnosis and effective treatments, most people with HIV won't develop  AIDS will live a near-normal lifespan. The practice currently offers free HIV testing to all patients.

Chlamydia Screening
Chlamydia screening is offered for young adults under 25
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It's passed on from one person to another through unprotected sex (sex without a condom) and is particularly common in sexually active teenagers and young adults.
In 2013, more than 200,000 people tested positive for chlamydia in England. Almost 7 in every 10 people diagnosed with the condition were under 25 years old

The National Chlamydia Screening Programme advises that women aged 16-25 get tested yearly, or get tested after each change of partner. Up to 80% of young people with a chlamydia infection don’t know they have it.
